The Hanged Man is the astonishing true story of a man surrounded by trauma and violence who is forced to become a superman in order to survive. The events that forge Ron Van Clief are brought on by harsh circumstances, fierce racism, and tragic choices, however Van Clief does not succumb to victimization. With an iron will, he becomes “The Black Dragon” the first black martial arts film star, and one of the greatest martial artists of all time. His determination to win – despite horrific odds–exacts a heavy toll and his life becomes a roller coaster ride with spectacular highs, devastating lows, and more than a few cliff-hangers. Ron’s biography reads like a microcosm of the American experience in crisis. His father is so abusive that as a teenager Ron plots his murder. Only a few years later Ron is actually lynched by a gang of racists and left to die. In Vietnam he is forced to become a killing machine. On the Lower East Side of New York, drug lords try to gun down Ron and his child. He tears through countless unhappy relationships with women. He is by turns wealthy and homeless. There is serious damage inside, and one tragic loss still haunts him to this day. Despite these struggles, Ron miraculously attains excellence and fame being a man among men.

Ron Van Clief has had a very interesting life. This bio is a must read for all of his fans. The beginning of the book will immediately capture your interest as Van Clief explains how he was beaten, hung and left for dead when he was in the military. His story is very touching and you will get angry and feel involved in the story. The book should have been edited better. It goes back and forth from the present to the past and this disrupts the momentum of the story. All of the stories of his teen years and childhood should've been put together and the story should've ended in the present. Lance ( Sparky) Parks adds some incoherent babble at the end of the book that isn't needed. Van Clief should've found a better coauthor, Nevertheless, the book is very interesting and I have more respect for Van Clief who provided an African American hero to the masses in the seventies. I saw Van Clief in Fist of Fear, Touch of Death but I really didn't know who he was. I knew about Jim Kelly. Van Clief's Black Dragon films are excellent. Once I saw them I became interested in him. He is an accomplished martial artist and he has secured his place in history. Van Clief should've provided a filmography as well as a list of all of the books that he has authored. I also wanted him to elaborate more on his experiences as he filmed each of his hit films. Nevertheless, this book will keep your interest from beginning to end. Highly recommended.Product details

This book weaves the reader through some of America's less shining moments as a hero was created through survival. Reading of the blatant unedited brutality of America's racism, the Vietnam War and a determination to survive should inspire all to continue to persevere! The story is riveting and a must read!!!
great for martial arts book collection
He babbles through most of this book and I wish I would've purchased a better book than reading this crap!
I was greatly disappointed by this book. Van Clief has had such an amazing life, but this book is disjointed and full of such tortured writing that it is sometimes hard to follow. Maybe it is just the edition, but it skips back and forth with place and time, especially in the first half, so I had to struggle to figure out the sequence of events and seperate thought from reality. When the book was able to focus, I was fascinated by the narrative, but it would benefit greatly from a savage editing.
I met Ron in 1975 when he was in Chicago to appear in a show. He wore a white gung fu top and emerald green satin pants. His self defense was agile as it was dynamic. So he was what the story said he was. I had no idea all this happened to him. Now I have renewed respect. However, the writing was heavy handed, over wrought, and strained for effect. The point of view suffered with unannounced and abrupt shifts between third and first person. Was Ron talking about himself to the reader or thinking to himself about what was happening while it was happening? I was often distracted and growing confused with who was doing the telling about whom. If the writing had stuck to a more linear straight narrative, i would have better been able to follow "Ron" from Viet Nam to Hollywood hanging (no Pun) on every word of a story in flight that didn't look back.
Man, if all this happened to this man, he didn't show it at our show even with Jim Kelly there whom he had no affection for. Oh Yes. He was the fight coordinator for "The Last Dragon" movie which I wasn't aware of at the time I read for the part. It was down to three actors. The casting director said they needed someone who was "cute" and innocent and didn't look like he knew Karate at the beginning of the movie but learned to where the audience would buy the journey of transformation achieved by "the glow" in the main fight scene. From Kid to master in two hours. I admit I didn't look innocent enough. Its all about the look. Ron had say on who got the role of the kid, "Bruce LeRoy." The guy was his student so you know he got it. I would have done the same thing. If I saw Ron , I would have reminded him of our meeting back when. Its all who you met back then and know now. Im just saying thats how the business is despite the auditions.
But the writing made me feel bad because the writing over melodramatized what could have been a story told with absolute absorption if it only trusted its gut instead of selling out to platitudes.
